About Cornerstone House Centre

About Cornerstone House Centre

Cornerstone House Centre is an independent charity located at the heart of Cumbernauld (charity number SC041782). We are also a limited company (registration number SC383997). The main reason we were set up was to provide a place where groups and organisations could come together to meet, to learn, to support each other and to enjoy life in a friendly, safe and convenient community setting.

The Cornerstone House Centre building is community owned, and purposefully designed to be utilised by community organisations, projects, initiatives and citizens. The organisation is registered as a Disability Confident Committed employer, and has signed up to ensure its recruitment and employment processes are fully inclusive and accessible.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

Social Enterprise

As a registered charity, Cornerstone House Centre exists to provide a social benefit. In order to continue to provide its services, the organisation operates as a social enterprise. A social enterprise is a venture which generates income through adopting a business model, with the funds then invested back into the social enterprise and used for community and social purposes.

Premises letting of the organisation's community owned building, including room, facilities and office hire, form the basis of Cornerstone House Centre's social enterprise activity. Further additional fundraising activities are also adopted in line with the organisation's ethos, vision and values.

Other social enterprise initiatives are facilitated through a Community Space facility in Antonine Shopping Centre, hosting of regular Cumbernauld Community Tea Dances, cafe services, and children's games sessions.

ACHIEVING SUCCESS THROUGH TEAMWORK

Our People

We believe our people are our most valuable asset and resource at Cornerstone House Centre. As such, a brief overview of our Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteer Team and Centre Users is highlighted below:

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors at Cornerstone House Centre is responsible for governing the organisation, providing strategic leadership and direction. The Board is led by the Chair, Alan Welsh, who works together with the Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and other Trustees to ensure that the organisation is delivering its charitable objectives within the guidelines of charity law as monitored by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). In this respect, Board members have a duty of care, a duty of loyalty and a duty of obedience on behalf of the organisation, operating to the organisation’s Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association.

All Board members at Cornerstone House Centre are volunteers and give freely of their time to guide and support the organisation. The Board has a close working relationship with The Centre Manager, who oversees operational governance. It should be noted that whilst sharing the Cornerstone name, premises and working in close partnership, Cornerstone House Centre is a stand-alone charity which is independent of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship.

Staff and Volunteer Team

Mary McNeil, Centre Manager, leads a relatively small but skilled, robust and committed team of staff and volunteers at Cornerstone House Centre. The office at Cornerstone House Centre is open every weekday and often at weekends too, depending on Centre activities, and can be accessed via drop-in, telephone, email or social media.

Staff are fully trained, equipped and supported to manage daily operations at Cornerstone House Centre, and are focussed on the organisation’s vision of flourishing communities, quality services and facilities, healthier and happier people, and a thriving Cumbernauld. The staff strive to create a warm, friendly and customer-centric environment for facility users and their visitors.

Volunteers form an integral part of Cornerstone House Centre's team, and the organisation has been proactive in establishing a robust volunteering infrastructure.

Importantly, Cornerstone House Centre recognises that whilst volunteering is given freely, it is not cost free. The Centre commits time and resources to invest in volunteers in terms of recruitment, training, disclosure, development, supervision, support and recognition. The organisation believes that volunteering is more likely to work well if the roles of volunteers are clearly defined, so that volunteers feel secure about what they are doing and paid staff feel comfortable with the tasks of volunteers. As a result, all Centre volunteers are provided with a comprehensive volunteer role descriptor.

Centre Users

Service and Centre Users are the heartbeat of Cornerstone House Centre.
