School’s Out, Fun’s In! Exciting Programme of Free Summer Family Activities in Cumbernauld

Cumbernauld Family Hub has released a fun-filled calendar of free activities and events for children and families to participate in over the school holidays during July and August, including Creative Kids Sessions, Family Boxercise, Cornerstone Movie Days and a Summer Disco.

Suitable for family members of all ages, the planned sessions provide an ideal opportunity to meet other parents and children from the Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Northern Corridor area in a safe, friendly and supported environment.

School holiday activities have been a successful part of the Cornerstone House Centre’s service delivery since 2017. Supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, the summer schedule is being rolled-out as part of the unique and established Cumbernauld Family Hub.

This is an innovative family support resource that covers a multitude of pursuits to create interesting and unique personal development opportunities for local families. It is designed to be utilised by couples, lone parents and kinship carers, and aims to maximise social, environmental and cultural outcomes for parents and children.

WHAT FREE INTERACTIVE CUMBERNAULD FAMILY HUB ACTIVITIES CAN MY CHILDREN AND I PARTICIPATE IN THIS SUMMER?

Creative Kids, a unique arts and craft session which encourages children and parents / caregivers to bond through getting creative together, will begin on Tuesday 2 July 2024 from 10.00am-12noon at Cornerstone House (1 Esk Walk, Cumbernauld, G67 1BZ). A further session will be hosted on Friday 2 August 2024 from 1.00pm-3.00pm.

Attending children will have the opportunity to be supported to make a range of decorative items on the day. All necessary materials and resources will be provided by session facilitators, with other general arts activities such as colouring-in also available.

Meanwhile, an innovative Giant Games Day, providing a unique experience for children which has to be seen to be believed, will take place on Monday 8 July 2024 from 1.00pm-3.00pm at Cornerstone House. This fun and informal gathering will enable children and families to play enormous versions of household games together, including a range of classics such as snakes and ladders, Connect Four, Ludo and skittles.

If burning off some energy is more your child’s forte, Family Boxercise taking place on Monday 22 July 2024 from 10.00am-11.00am at the same venue could be right up your street. This encourages children and parents / caregivers to get moving through a safe, non-contact, boxing based exercise class with an emphasis on having fun. All equipment is supplied, and participants will work in family units or in larger groups, with team games right across the hour.

Summer offerings of Bookbug are also being provided on Thursday 4 July 2024 and Monday 5 August 2024 from 10.00am-10.45am (both sessions) at Conerstone House. Bookbug is for children aged 0-5 years and their parents, guardians or kinship carers. It provides an opportunity for families to enjoy sharing stories, songs and rhymes in a safe, friendly and informal environment.

Bookbug classes are great at enabling families to spend time bonding with each other and meet other parents in the local area. It can also help to build children’s social skills and support their speech and language development.

Furthermore, a brace of free movie and children’s animation treats is being provided for children during the summer break. The ever-popular Cornerstone Family Movie Days will see films and television shows beaming on a large cinema screen at Cornerstone House.

The award-winning 2023 Walt Disney animated musical fantasy film Wish will be shown on Tuesday 16 July 2024 from 1.00pm-3.00pm, with episodes of Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol screening on Wednesday 24 July 2024 from 10.00am-12noon.

As the school holidays draw to a close, children and families have the opportunity to squeeze in a final bit of excitement by dancing their way to a lively Summer Family Disco being delivered by popular local DJ Steven Murray on Wednesday 7 August 2024 from 11.30am-2.00pm at Cornerstone House. Characters In The Community, a Cumbernauld family entertainment service which provides fun and friendly dressed up characters to meet local children, will also be present on the day.
