Cornerstone Café reopened to the public on Tuesday 18 May 2021 for the first time in five months following the easing of coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, with customers welcome back five days per week for food and refreshments.
The Café, which is based within Cornerstone House (at 1 Esk Walk, Cumbernauld, G67 1BZ), offers an ideal meeting place for those in the local area, or simply somewhere to stop and have a rest during a busy day’s shopping within Cumbernauld town centre.
Like all other cafes and restaurants across the country, Cornerstone Cafe was forced to indefinitely close in March 2020 and then again in December 2020 due to national lockdown restrictions. Now, with Phase 3 of Scottish Government’s route map out of lockdown in operation once again, the Cafe is well-positioned for a phased reopening as of next week.
The Cafe’s new temporary opening hours will be Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am-3.00pm, with a view to returning to its regular six days per week opening schedule in the near future. The team has worked really hard to get the Cafe ready and safe to reopen its doors, and the staff are looking forward to seeing all the customers again.
It is hoped that the change to opening hours won’t last long and that the Cafe can get back to normal soon. This will be reviewed on a week to week basis. Mary McNeil, Development Manager at Cornerstone House Centre, the charity which manages the community-owned building in which Cornerstone Cafe is based, added:
“Under its tenancy, Cornerstone Cafe adheres to strict hygiene procedures both in terms of food preparation and standards of cleanliness.
“People visiting Cornerstone Cafe can be assured that a full health and safety risk assessment in relation to COVID-19 has been undertaken and that every reasonable step has been taken to ensure the safety of all customers from the moment they enter until the moment they leave the building.
“This includes clear instructions for safe walking routes around the premises, socially-distanced dining tables and provision of on-site hand sanitising stations.”
Cornerstone Café, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019, offers breakfasts, teas, lunches and snacks, providing both a sit-in and takeaway service. Other catering services, including buffet provision, can be booked through the Café (with a minimum of eight days notice to ensure adequate supplies and that customer requirements are fully met).
Over several years, the Café has developed an excellent reputation as one of Cumbernauld’s most used and popular food outlets, with a strong and established regular customer base visiting the Café on a weekly basis. It is renowned for its friendly staff team, quality of catering, great customer service and inclusiveness.
Whilst the Cafe’s doors have been closed to the public at various times over the past year, the team have remained busy behind the scenes by helping vulnerable people in the Greater Cumbernauld area to be fed during the coronavirus pandemic.
During the height of the pandemic, the Cafe actively supported Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in preparing and distributing 200 free portions of soup weekly to local individuals and families on low income or experiencing disadvantage. Many of these portions were allocated through Bethlehem House of Bread Food Bank, providing much-needed support to those affected by food poverty during the COVID-19 crisis.
