New Children’s Dance and Drama Classes Taking Centre Stage at Cornerstone House

Children and young people living in Greater Cumbernauld with an interest in dance, drama and musical theatre have the opportunity to attend a diverse range of weekly classes and activities taking place at Cornerstone House Centre facilities this winter.

Several respected dance academies and associated organisations have chosen to provide accessible services from Cornerstone House and The Community Space this year, recognising the advantages that these venues have in terms of location, size, space and suitability for social distancing.

One such group is ACH Dance Company and Musical Theatre, a popular local dance school which is currently providing a catalogue of 20 affordable weekly classes at Cornerstone House, with an open invitation extended to youngsters of all ages.

Every Monday at allocated time slots between 5.00pm and 9.00pm, the organisation facilitates dedicated classes focussing on acrotricks, intermusical theatre, pointe and contemporary lyrical dance for different age groups.

On Tuesday evenings, classes hosted by ACH at Cornerstone House include Inter Senior Cheerleading, Junior Hip Hop, Senior Hip Hop, Junior Contemporary Dance, Senior Musical Theatre, Ballet and Jazz and Tap Dance.

If a weekend offering is more suitable for your family, the group also provides a range of sessions every Saturday between 9.30am and 3.15pm. These include Preschool Dance, Majorettes, Cheerleading, Ballet and Jazz and Tap Dance. ACH also coordinates competition teams, yearly exams and yearly shows for those serious about advancing their dance competencies.

Meanwhile, a number of other dance schools providing low-cost weekly sessions at Cornerstone House are currently welcoming new youth participants from Cumbernauld and surrounding areas.

ExtravaDance Academy, which offers training in tap dance, ballet, contemporary dance, freestyle dance, hip hop, cheerleading and jazz dance, has two classes running between 4.45pm and 6.45pm on Tuesdays. For details, contact 07917 335376 or visit the ExtravaDance Academy Facebook page.

On Thursdays from 7.00pm-9.00pm, young people also have the option to attend Caroline Jane Dance Academy classes, which incorporate street and commercial dance, ballet, lyrical dance, jazz dance and show girl dance. If performance is more your child’s area of interest, attending a weekly class hosted by VMJ Acting Academy at Cornerstone House Centre’s Community Space facility in Antonine Shopping Centre could be perfect for them.

Organised by a team of experienced and qualified staff, VMJ aims to help children and young people aged 5-18 years-old increase confidence and social skills through learning and participating in drama-based activities.

Drama classes for Minis (5-7 year-olds), Juniors (8-10 year-olds), Intermediates (11-14 year-olds) and Seniors (15-18 year-olds) are rolled out at different times between 10.00am and 4.00pm every Saturday at The Community Space, costing from £6.00 and £7.50 per week. The sessions coach participants in performance and expressionism, with a focus on strengthening bonds and helping young people learn, develop and portray their skills and emotions in a safe and friendly environment.

Another organisation which offers a weekly provision from Cornerstone House is Cumbernauld Gaelic Choir, an award-winning musical group which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. All organisations facilitating classes at Cornerstone House Centre facilities at this time are doing so in adherence with Scottish Government guidance in relation to social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions. Mary McNeil, Development Manager at Cornerstone House Centre, said:

“We understand that Cumbernauld families may have safety concerns about their children attending dance classes and other activities in the community at present due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Those sending their children to participate in groups can be assured that Cornerstone House Centre has undertaken a comprehensive health and safety risk assessment in respect of COVID-19, and that the organisation is committed to taking every reasonable step to ensure the safety of all visitors from the moment they enter until the moment they leave the premises.

“This includes clear instructions for safe walking routes around the venues, the installation of several hand sanitising stations and Perspex screens at reception and other areas where Centre staff and volunteers are operating.”
