Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub Launches With Talk And Transcend Helpline

People across Cumbernauld and surrounding areas have the opportunity to access a variety of new local services supporting mental health and wellbeing following the launch of an innovative project by Cornerstone House Centre this autumn.

Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub is designed to provide free emotional, practical and holistic community supports to improve mental wellbeing while reducing mental health inequalities and stigma for individuals and families.

The enterprise aims to address critical gaps in local mental health provisions by offering direct support, peer-led provisions and community education during 2025-26. Targeted beneficiaries include Cumbernauld residents with mental health diagnoses, long-term conditions, socioeconomic disadvantages and older adults.

Hub activities have been structured to enable improvement in participants’ mental health, connectivity, financial stability, coping strategies, resilience and empowerment. The venture is supported by Community Solutions North Lanarkshire via Scottish Government’s Community and Voluntary Sector Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund.

WHAT NEW SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE AND HOW CAN THEY BE ACCESSED?

A mainstay of the initiative is the new Talk and Transcend telephone helpline. This can be accessed by any local person and aims to serve as a first-stop shop for listening, advice, compassion, signposting, social contact and practical assistance for those experiencing distress or anxiety.

The helpline is complemented by an email support service and a town centre drop-in scheme, with availability as follows:

  • Telephone Helpline  |  Open 9am-4pm daily  |  T: 07543 479893
  • Email Support  |  Replies within 48 hours  |  E: wellbeing@cornerstone-house.org.uk
  • Drop-In  |  Weekdays 10am-2pm  |  Cornerstone House Centre, 1 Esk Walk, Cumbernauld, G67 1BZ

The Community Mental Health Hub also offers weekly Together Therapy peer support groups which engage participants in activities such as mindfulness, alternative therapies and relaxation sessions. Sessions take place at Cornerstone House Centre and seek to promote community bonding, social inclusion and reduced isolation.

Meanwhile, free Thrive on Through workshops focussing on alleviating cost of living pressures for local people will also be rolled out, whilst a Tackling Taboo campaign will spotlight the impact of mental health issues in Cumbernauld, targeting stereotypes and promoting positive discussions.

A GAME CHANGING SERVICE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING IN CUMBERNAULD

For some time, Cornerstone House Centre has identified a pressing and ever-increasing need for establishment of a central, dedicated, independent and multipurpose Community Mental Health Hub serving people in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and the Northern Corridor.

This recognition is grounded in extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders, assessment of neighbourhood health demographics and the organisation’s wide-ranging knowledge of local issues. Janiece Ndoye, Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub Coordinator at Cornerstone House Centre, said:

“It’s true indeed that there is no such thing as good health without good mental health. Many people face some kind of mental health challenge at some point in their lives.

“If your mental health or wellbeing is in a difficult place right now, remember that you’re not alone and that with the right support most people get well again or find a way to cope and live a normal life again.

“Our organisation is an advocate of improving local mental health and wellbeing with a view to enhancing people’s quality of life, relationships and resilience.

“We recognise that a high number of adults in Cumbernauld and surrounding areas face a raft of significant and debilitating mental, wellbeing and practical challenges on a daily basis because of unprecedented societal pressures.

“The impact of the spiralling cost of living has been devastating for many local families, resulting in financial insecurity, poverty, deprivation, fear and anxiety.

“Equally, cuts to services, reduced support and insecure employment have taken a toll. The increased use of social media and smartphones has also been associated with adverse mental health symptoms in the area.

“Hence, after some detailed work to put in place a wide-ranging provision which will support Cumbernauld residents in a significant way, Cornerstone House Centre is pleased to launch Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub.

“The telephone helpline and email support service are open to anyone in the Cumbernauld area, including family members, older people, those on lower incomes, people facing physical or mental health challenges, people who are lonely or isolated, individuals unable to leave the house, carers and those experiencing health inequalities.

“The Hub will bringing together the knowledge, expertise and skills of Cornerstone House Centre, Cumbernauld Family Hub, Cumbernauld Community Health Information Hub, Cumbernauld Community Forum, Cumbernauld Poverty Action and others for the benefit of local people and organisations.

“We recognise that so many amazing communities and organisations are doing their bit to help people in the Cumbernauld area at this time, and our goal is to work together with everyone to maximise the impact of all the mental health and wellbeing support services on offer.”

Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub can help those facing a range of different circumstances and problems, including people experiencing stress, depression and low mood. It can also support individuals going through social isolation or loneliness and who might need someone to talk to.

Practically, the service is able to facilitate referrals to suitable local groups that offer wellbeing initiatives, support with finance worries and allocation of emergency food and toiletry parcels.

If you or someone you know needs help, advice or simply someone to talk to at this time, please contact the Cumbernauld Community Mental Health Hub on 07543 479893 or email wellbeing@cornerstone-house.org.uk.

A trained member of the team will discuss via telephone, email or drop-in the need or request that you have and seek to help in the most appropriate, practical and compassionate way.
