A Cumbernauld social enterprise which supports people to borrow manual tools is to host a special gardening workshop on Saturday 7 March 2020 at Cornerstone House Centre’s Community Space at Antonine Shopping Centre, Cumbernauld, with an invitation extended to book places now.
Taking place from 11.00am-12.00noon, the workshop will enable Cumbernauld citizens to visit Tool Library Cumbernauld and plant loofah seeds for taking home to grow. Loofah seeds can be grown indoors, developing into fibrous-textured plants from which loofahs can be extracted for the purpose of exfoliating the skin.
Tool Library Cumbernauld is an innovative organisation which provides quality tools and equipment for a range of purposes, including DIY, gardening, crafts, sports and kitchen usage, with local citizens able to join the group for an annual fee and borrow suitable items of equipment throughout the year.
The charity has an overarching aim of reducing the waste that is sent to landfill by encouraging people to borrow items that are infrequently used, providing low and zero waste products locally and raising awareness of waste issues and solutions.
Two types of membership are offered by Tool Library Cumbernauld; an unlimited member (£50 per annum, £35 for concessions) can borrow up to 10 items an unlimited number of times throughout the year, whilst a mini-member (£20 per annum, £15 for concessions) can borrow up to five tools in one year.
Additionally, unlimited borrowers receive a 5% discount on low and zero waste household products that are available to buy, such as refills of washing-up liquid and hand soap. They are also eligible for a 10% discount on Tool Library workshops and can add a second adult with the same address free of charge as a member. Gift vouchers can be purchased through the organisation’s website at www.toollibrarycumbernauld.org.
Visitors to Cornerstone House Centre’s Community Space, located at Unit 14 of Antonine Shopping Centre, can drop in and access Tool Library Cumbernauld every Monday (12.00noon-4.00pm), Thursday (12.00noon-6.00pm), Friday (12.00noon-4.00pm) and Saturday (10.00am-1.00pm), with an open invitation extended to all.
The Community Space, opened in August 2019, is a partnership initiative between Cornerstone House Centre and Antonine Shopping Centre with a view to improving health and wellbeing in the Cumbernauld area. It forms part of a wider Cumbernauld Community Health Information Hub which was launched 12 months ago by Cornerstone House Centre on behalf of Health and Social Care North Lanarkshire.
One popular feature of The Community Space is the provision of free table tennis equipment, facilities and play for visitors to Antonine Shopping Centre. Over 1,000 citizens have accessed the facility in the last six months.
